microsoft, ps3, sony, xbox 360GameSpy: PS3 is 'definitely beating 360 in some areas of online'

The momentum's now with Sony, reckons firm's director of technology

It used to be the console war was a question of getting out the sliderule and measuring comparative polygon thoroughput. Now, however, gamers - and even developers - are much more likely to try to measure the relative performance of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo by the online features their consoles offer.

Few have as good a viewpoint on that particular battle as Todd Northcutt, GameSpy's director of technology. Thanks to the company's position as the exclusive online partner for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, as well as its middleware licensing agreements with Sony and Microsoft, Northcutt works closely with each manufacturer.

"I don't think you've seen the same pace of innovation from Microsoft as you have from Sony recently," he told Develop in a pre-E3 briefing. "It's been steadily improving the PlayStation 3 as an online gaming device and an entertainment device while the Xbox 360 has had its half yearly updates but there's nothing groundbreaking that's been released, other than a couple of changes to the marketplace."

"We have a really good relationship with Sony and it's great to see the evolution of the platform.

Scaleform - GFX

I think it's experienced a lot of evolution and in some places PlayStation 3 is definitely beating out Xbox."

As for the conventional wisdom that Nintendo's lagging well back in third place when it comes to online features for Wii, Northcutt says, that's just because of the company's fundamentally different approach.

"We're working very closely with Nintendo but the vision is all about how to make the online multiplayer environment less scary to its audience," he explains. "Nintendo is very sensitive about that and it's refreshing. It applies a critical lens to the issue.

"For example, with Mario Kart Wii, there's not a high-score list. Instead your ranking is shown on a much more friendly distribution curve so you're not a number. You're not 451,479th best player in the world. You're somewhere in the middle of the bell-shaped curve, maybe a bit better than average, which is important because most players aren't going to number 1 in the world and don't care about that. But they might care about being the second highest rated player amongst their friends or the best player in their zip code."

As both a developer AND a end user, I can see both sides. As a developer, PS3 come on leaps and bounds in the last 18 months, and the facilities that PS3 offer are equal or greater than the 360 offering.
As a end user, the fact I can use all these features without any subscription fees is killer, and will be the deciding factor for many people.

But the playstation has only updated to the level that the 360 is currently at, and it still doesnt feel as good. Just small things like the demos downloading and installing instantly makes Live my preffered choice.

PS3 online features may not be yet at xbox360 level, but it's free! Give them time and it will be equal, and still be free!

Sony's certainly ahead, and has been for some time, in terms of dedicated server support in their titles.

The client-side software has been lagging, but it's catching up now with in-game XMB, trophies etc. If they implement good cross-game invitations and voice chat, and if Home evolves well, then they could certainly leap ahead of Microsoft definitively IMO.

I think a good sign that Sony is making progress is that Microsoft has for the first time since launch been prompted to make significant changes to Live via the new dashboard and online party management (the latter of which is clearly an idea borrowed from Home).

Most of what I'd like to see done to PS3 is outside online. Add voice chat to the in-game XMB. Give developers an out of the box solution to creating game lobbies, preferably taking Resistance & Warhawk as a model of how to do it correctly.
As for other tweaks, fix the formatting of the new clock. Switch off idle controllers after 10 mins. Give me a global way of setting the sound level going to my amp instead of me having to do it in every game. In the video, photo I need to store items by year & month. In the music column I need to store my artist & album. Also let me sort these in ascending and descending order. Turn off the PS3 when downloads have completed.

I own a PS3 and 360..A launch 360 and a launch PS3 with 160HDD. I loved 360 LIVE great way to talk to my younger brother in Germany...

But, I tend to prefer PSN even though its lacking a few things...

One Thing I noticed the other day: I down loaded Semi-Pro for 360 (480p) and Black Hawk Down for PS3(SD) I was able to watch Black Hawk down while it downloaded I was not able to do the same with my 360 I had to wait till 4.38gigs was done before I can watch it.

The thing that I like with PSN its free. Face braker demo came out on 360 and PSN my subsribtition with LIVE has expired I could not download Facebreaker for 360 when it came out I had to wait...Facebreaker came out on my PSN the following week...I went online and downloaded it right away.. There is also more customization with PSN versus LIVE

i disagree because with Sony all they have been doing is copying xbox live and not doing anything groundbreaking or revolutionary it is very easy to see what everyone else is doing and say hey we can do that. besides it being free there are no pros on having the Psn service over live and you never have to wait that long before viewing a movie check your connection...by the way water is also free but people still buy it...

Both PS3 and Wii sure knows how to get people to play online, it's free!
Plus the PS3 and the Wii both have a huge library of older games to explore.
You're not stuck to play online by force because you paid for it and want to enjoy the most out of your money.

It's always free, nothing beats free.

I have no problem paying $50/yr for Live. It is less than the cost of one game per year and I use it constantly. I don't think I have ever heard anyone who uses Live Gold complain about the price. At all times, I can see what my friends are doing and send them invites or messages. I love that. It is a very social way to game and interact with your friends.

Sony's online doesn't feel social. I can't explain what it is, but it feels empty, kinda like how the weight of the PS3 controller makes it feel cheap when compared to the 360 controller.

To the point of MS borrowing the upcoming dashboard update from Home, that seems a little off, especially considering that the new dashboard looks like it will beat Home to market. It would be more accurate to say that Sony borrowed from Sims or Second Life. To it's core, the new dashboard borrows from and builds upon the Mii idea that Nintendo brought to their console.

In my opinion, the ps3 is the clear winner. i always hear people saying 360s better, but in what way, i mean 360 doesnt even have an internet browser, and its a microsoft product! Now that sony has implemented trophies its over, i even have an elusive platinum trophy in my collection.
im also looking for others who have a platinum trophy, so contact me
PSN ID: KingGreenz
Good Trophy hunting!!!!

I think ps3 is the winner, Microsoft just love money and while cut corners in the console and charge for a service that should come with the console. I mean it shows who is more concerned about what the public get by the hardware, ps3 - worth more than the selling price and rarely breaks.
360 - as said by a dev who helped made it, ms made the employees rush the making which caused rrod, also leaving out that tiny piece of rubber that stops you from scratching your discs. In my head it makes me think they did this deliberately so people would have to buy more copy's of games.
When it comes down to it, Microsoft will throw a load of cash around to get they're own way and secure things. Which is good for 360 owners. But to me they just don't show any compassion with what they are doing, they just want to make money. As for Sony want to make they're costumers have a great experience and are always there working to improve it.

So... he really didn't list the areas that PSN was ahead. PSN's efforts are great, but are still not as feature-rich as what Xbox Live offers. PSN still does not have cross-game invites. Trophies... I can count on one hand that number of games have them. The XBL community is more tightly held together with dedicated MS community personnel and the community calendar of events. Its system of social engineering is testament to how well-thought out XBL is. PSN is still playing catch-up. New XBL features like the new dash and party system will be a reality while Home launches its open beta. Sorry. I just don't see how PSN is ahead.

PS3 is definitely beating 360 in some areas of online, yet he seems incapable of mentioning a single reason why that is.
i always hear people saying 360s better, but in what way
360 has no forced installs. It has a greater amount of content available on Live. It has a consistent set of features across all games, rather than having trophies or custom soundtracks for a handful of titles, and keeping your fingers crossed that anymore will get support for those things. Demos don't need to be installed. Cross platform games are, more often than not, better on the Xbox 360. Games developers like Carmack say that the one and only thing that's better on the PS3 is the storage - in every other respect - graphics, processing, ease of development - 360 wins.

Does that help answer your question?

“Ps3”
Posted by: Evildoc - Aug 12, 6:35am

1st let me say that i have owned both. I started with a 360 and without the Gold Live account. I enjoyed SP games and sport tittles. After about a year with only a 360 and no live subscription i purchased Gold 12mo account. And wow the games i played and the games i began to enjoy really changed. Once i started to place GOW, and Halo3 i really enjoyed the online service. But (there is always a but) i began to notice that in general the other people i met online were d!p****s, cursing yelling racist BS and really detracted from the experience. Once my original 360 broke (and the replacement unit) i decided it was time to jump ship ;) Once i got online with my New Ps3 i notice a huge difference in online game play, 1st its way way easier to jump into an online game with another Live VS the PSN, but PSN is free. Then i started to think, the Ps3 is constantly getting updated to either add features or improve and will continue to be free, while the 360 became stagnant and continue to charge. Most consoles last 5 years before a new one comes out, and i'm not willing to pay $250 bucks (over 5yrs) and have to deal with constant hardware crashes. The fact is the Ps3 gets better and better as time goes on while the 360 has plateaued. That only is a real deal breaker for me, there for i whole heartily aggree the Ps3 is really becoming a contender and will only get better.

I have both, and i would have to agree with Evildoc, but XBL has nothing but a bunch of little kids or immature adults that talk alot of crap which gets annoying. When all you want to do is play online but then a kid that is yelling at his TV because he's getting owned then you have to hear him get spanked by his mother, it's excruciating.

PS3 is the clear winner.

Sony's psn is better hands down for two reasons
1. Quality is becoming better if not already
2. The price the only way for microsoft to bet sony's price is to pay us to play online.
and to the comment about water being free and people still pay for it,the only reason people do pay for water is because it is a better quality water, but if it were the same as free water people would stop buying it
so if sony can offer the same or even better service then it would not make sense to pay for a lesser one.

Ohhh yeah. PS3 definitely has the momentum

The 360 has been selling more the last couple of weeks - and both console are now on a downward slope.

Stupidity in articles like this still seem to amaze me.

"PS3 is 'definitely beating 360 in some areas of online' "
I'm sorry, it's too vague...

"We have a really good relationship with Sony... "

Now i understand why the previous statement....

The PSN is "evolving" to what XBL is.
I know the X360 hardware is crap, but talking about XBL, well it's unique; XBL is not the only place where you find childish and racist behavior, come one people... If you stick only to that, it's pathetic. I hate when my console breaks because is sh**ty piece of hardware, but i don't mind to pay for live service (and i'm not rich or even close). For the one saying that ppl pays for better water than free one, it's the same happening to live service against PSN. XBL it's obvious better than PSN (in which areas you ask? does it sound too vague?, well read the facts above in previous posts if you want an answer).

Cheers.

PS: "some areas online"... OMG and that's the GameSpy's director of technology... you're working closely with PS3, right? how biased is that?

Next time you're on XBL, Google the reasons why PS3 is and will only become more superior than the 360. You'll run into a few uncomfortable facts: First, You CAN'T Google anything on your Xbox... Second, the PS3 and PSN develops exponentially over time. I see too many 360 owners come out of nowhere with "360 graphics, etc, etc are better than PS3" which is already ignorant at the least. What makes that comment even sadder is that the PS3's (Cell) power has only been tapped; wait until developers actually learn how to make the PS3 purr. For my final point, how are HD-DVD sales looking?

If I want to browse the web I'll use a PC. If I want to play an 360 game against random strangers, I'll use my 360.
As for HD-DVD sales, who knows? I didn't buy a games console to watch videos (or buy the add-on), and I thought we were talking about the online experience anyway ... how is your blu-ray capability relevent to online?

how is blue ray relevant to online you ask? well I don't see MGS4 and MGO coming to the 360,why?....it won't fit on the disc.score 1 for blue ray.MAG=256 player online wars, possible only on the ps3,why?......you guessed it,blue ray.I used to have a 360,I don't have many positive things to say about it,XBL is decent but paying for it is ridiculous.PSN is getting better and better, the warhawk servers rival any MS servers, the PS store is now really user friendly, and best of all its FREE.I shelled out alot of money to get all "next gen" ,system,games,headset..etc.Its nice to just plug in and play online without some greedy subscription fee that is set up in tiers,gold,platinum,....it all looks like $$$$$ to me.Sony is winning and will continue to as long as they keep improving the experience.Thank you Sony,I am enjoying PSN alot and my ps3 runs like a dream.
