Frontier founder confirms that sequel to famed space game will land after The Outsider
Frontier Developments is close to finalising the technology that will power Elite 4, the long-awaited sequel to boss David Braben's space adventure series.
Braben confirmed the news during a talk at the Develop conference today.
He said that the game itself "had not been forgotten" and that it would be released after his political adventure game epic The Outsider is released next year.
He admitted that the game itself, which he has repeatedly made refernece to in interviews for the past few years, has had a stop-start production as Frontier keeps testing technology and then rejecting it.
Braben described Elite 4 as a "really amibitious project" but confirmed there was a team actively working on it in order to get it right.

I'd prefer the game set in the Frontier universe (Federation and Empire), but each to his own I guess.

There are thargoids in the Frontier universe. Here, go play FFE, take a secret mission and forget to blow up the satelite with the nuke (this gets the INRA chasing you). Travel, scooping fuel as needed, way north to Miacke. Let off a few shots and presto, galactic warfare except that you are the centre of the universe, so it's you vs everyone.

How many times in the last 20 years have we heard this type of hype regarding the release of Elite 4. I don't even take it seriously anymore.

We have to trust David Braben on his word to deliver which will probably be his legacy. No other game in history is more eagerly awaited than E4. I am 33 years old now and remember fondly Elite 1 & 2. These days I play EVE - online, which is a MMORPG based on Elite(fans of EVE will burn me for that statement). I only hope that E4 looks at EVE and takes inspiration from the player driven economy and utilises a simialr system. EVE has one major flaw which Elite, even on a BBC micro did so well, gravity, and the simulation of star systems including landing on planets. If these features make it into the game again then I will jump ship quicker than you can blink. I await with baited breath, and I will certainly be purchasing The Outsider when it is realeased as some say it is the spiritual succesor to Elite.

I too am 33, played the original Elite to death on a BBC Micro B. In fact my parents probably still have it! Every now and then I search the web for news on Elite 4, and every now and then I'm disappointed. This however is great news. Still a few years away I'm guessing but at least it's confirmed to be on its way. I don't play many video games nowadays and if I do it's the nostalgic stuff. This is one game I'll be upgrading my system for and purchasing on release. Fantastic!

Yay! I wasn't the fan of the original Elite because it was too arcadey and combat oriented. I loved Frontier and FFE because of the realism and scope so I hope Elite 4 will continue in that direction.

Now this would be a sweet engine to run E4 on :)

Will it be better than Eve-online?

I can't wait, I am only 24 but played and still do play elite 1 and elite plus. I used to love shooting at a space station and seeing how long you could last against the vipers that emerged. I hope that they do not keep E4 to the PC and spread the joy to the consoles like the 360 and PS3.
The World needs a decent space simulator and E4 will be hugely successful.

olaa dear space traders/hunters/pirates
i m 35 an i played E1 to death as well.. i never tried e2 and ffe,but what i ve found is a nice, time wasting open source sequel of e1 called oolite,it s huge and looks same like e1,but the tricky **** is that u can expand it all with so called opx's.it s giving a new opportunity to all u waiting complainers..lol just try it,it s in a new version now, with all the shebang u need the next 2 winters.take the famous searchengine and lookout for oolite.it s bigger,it s better it s driven by the old spirit.oh and u starting with just 100 cr ;)
enjoy it like i do.if u like to land on planets, bummer,u have to wait then.if not.. jump into the cobra mk3 and fight,if u have enuff money u re able to buy other ships.but what do i tell long stories, find it out on ur own.there r missions available with 8 or 9 different endings.so let the snow fall and play.

I'm tired of all these faggots with wannabe space games. Why don't you just suck my balls and blow me while waiting for the next civ game. You'll be rewarded!
