GAMEFEST 08: Epic's engine scrutinised by Gearbox, Chair Entertainment and Midway

We've just posted up an extensive summary of an in-depth and illuminating session from this week's Microsoft Gamefest conference which examines why three very different companies are using Epic's Unreal Engine - and what changes they have had to make to the middlware to make it right for them.

Gearbox's Randy Pitchford, Chair's Geremy Mustard and Midway/Surreal Studio's Stuart Denman all speak openly about the reasoning for opting to use middleware and the lessons studios must learn when it comes to trusting a tools provider.

Epic Games' president Michael Capps also offers sage advice on why studios should trust their middleware vendor - pointing to historical precedent in a franchise like Deus Ex as an example of why buying an engine and then trying to rebuild it is a mistake.

“modifiable? Extendable?”
Posted by: Devwyrm - Jul 25, 2:01pm

What exactly does Eric Capps mean by modifiable and extendable? It's not utterly impossible to tweak UE3 but it's not exactly set up to make that easy. To be fair hats off to Unreal for a great FPS platform, it's quick and slick if you want to get a game finished fast - but it sounds to me like Capps has realised that 'modifiable' and 'extendable' are increasingly at the top of studios' shopping lists and he's trying to attach those buzzwords to UE3.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big UE3 fan, but I just don't buy the claims about being easy to adapt. Sorry. It's not what I see as it's strengths.
