E3 08: New publishing deal for famed independent studio via growing EA Partners label

id boss John Carmack last night confirmed at EA's E3 press event that the studio has signed with EA to release its forthcoming first person shooter Rage.

Amid several big announcements emerging from EA's E3 Media Briefing, EA CEO John Riccitiello stressed the importance of the EA Partners initiative that has produced games like Battlefield and Rock Band.

ID boss Carmack, most famous for creating Doom, took to the stage to present a teaser trailer for the new title Rage and explained that it would combine action, exploration and driving elements, alongside the usual blood and guts.

Built on id's newest game engine, id Tech5, Rage is an all-new FPS for the PS3, 360, PC and Mac.

"Rage represents a new direction for our games," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software in the official announcement of the deal.

"Rage is a shooter unlike any other, developed on our cutting edge new technology, and built to the exacting standards id is famous for.

David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners added: "The Rage publishing deal is the epitome of EA Partners' mission: Provide the world's best developers with access to the world's best publishing resources.

"The team at id Software is one of the best development studios in the world. We're excited to work with id Software to give Rage a blockbuster launch on the global stage."

The deal continues EA and id's collaboration - the two previously worked together to release id Mobile's handheld games on the DS. Although previously id had also worked with Activision for distribution of its titles, including the likes of Quake and Wolfenstein.
