Development heavyweights go head to head; Metal Gear creator talks desire to create violent games
It seems the editors of Famitsu may have hired a new staff writer: in the latest issue, the magazine has enlisted the help of Assassin’s Creed producer Jade Raymond in interviewing famed Japanese developer Hideo Kojima.
In the piece, translated by Develop, Raymond spoke of the differences in culture and play style between different game markets, and asked Kojima how he creates games that are anticipated in both his native Japan and the West.
“The fundamentals of game design, and how the game controls, come from listening to my instinct, so those aspects get made first,” replied Kojima.
“The rest we adjust depending on the region. For example, the new system where you can read books to restore your spirit is in all versions of the game, but things like the speed of the recovery are changed depending on region.”
Raymond then asked how he feels about violence in games, given the current issues surrounding games and the Japanese market.
“I don’t think there are many games that tackle violence head on,” he said.
“When you hit someone or inflict pain, faces get disfigured for example, and I want to make games that show that sort of thing.”
“If you don’t see the pain, you can’t understand what you’ve done, and you’ll pass through battles without taking responsibility for your actions. I don’t want to ignore that. I want players to think, even if it’s just a little, about what violence and war are.”
Finally, talk turned to the recently released Assassin’s Creed, which Raymond admits takes much inspiration from Metal Gear Solid.
Kojima heaped the Ubisoft Montreal development team with similar praise, saying: “I’ve got to choose my words carefully so that I’m not misunderstood, but I think there are fewer developers around today who think about making a good game. As a creator, I find that sad, but when I see teams like the Assassin’s Creed team it gives me confidence. I want Assassin’s Creed to sell well.”

“sell well”

kojima wants Assassin's Creed to sell well. It will probably out sell MGS4...hahaha...no but i'm serious Assassin's Creed has put up some crazy numbers. I think it's at like 2 + million in the states both platforms and I think it's selling well in Europe. Not sure about Japan.

This is pretty interesting, especially the stuff he said about violence. I have much respect for the man.

It's not even released on DS yet smart ***, so I'm pretty sure that wouldn't contribute to their sales numbers.

Two million is a good amount, so it will be a challenge for MGS4 to sell more than that in the first year. Considering the popularity of the game, and the fact that it's supposed to have a simultaneous worldwide release, I'd expect it to sell quite well on day one.
Also, despite the poster "LOL" making a mistake about the Ds version of Assassin's Creed, It's still quite an advantage to release on three platforms while MGS4 will only be releasing on one.

Nor is it out on PC yet - it was delayed until summer '08.

Assassin's Creed is the worst game on any platform right now. It's soooo boring and brought Nothing New to the table.
Kojima just needed to say something nice to her face.I don't blame him, I would too. The worst game of 2007 for the PS3

It's normal you didn't like the game on your ****py console.
The game is so lame and sells so poorly that Ubisoft had to revise their prediction for the fiscal year from 825 million Euros to 840 million euros.
Surelly a game that sells like that MUST be lame.

Good article. I found his comment about pain being shown by your enemy very interesting. It opens the door to all sorts of possibilitys.
As far as Assasin goes even if you hate the game, the story and Jade you have to give props to the development team for making a game system that we have never seen before (free running, climbing). I can already imagine other games imitating the system. Imagine GTA like or even Naruto that would give you that kind of freedom.

What a load of ****, i have the upmost Respect for Hideo but have no reaspect for jade raymond or the 'montreal' team that made ****ssassins creed, the game was all about MAKING MONEY and not giving the gamer what they need!!! i mean every1 was waiting impatiently for AC but when i played it i was soooo dissapointed, they OBVIOUSLY didnt finish making the game in time for the deadline so theythrew together some half-assed storyline to bring it all together!! they thought bcos of the graphics it doesnt mater they didnt deliver what they previously pomised!!! B##ls##t!!!! every1 of MGS tiltles are INNOVATIVE and bring new concepts into a game whereas AC just worked on graphics, doesnt matter aout reppetitive gameplay and rubbish storyline as long as the graphics are top-notch and the idea is a good one!!! Rubbish kojima proved that with all psp mgs's, GAMEPLAY AND STORY MAKES A GOOD GAME thats why AC is rubbish....thats the reason it didnt get good reviews across the board!!!!! i***ame gets good reviews everywhere (like MGS) its GOOD i***ame get poor reviews everywhere then its *** but i***ame gets MEDIOCRE reviews and good ones then its usually a POOr game as some owners give a game a good review so they dont think about money wasted (like AC) sum ppl think its a good game, but why? Graphics thats it!!!nobody could make me think otherwise and graphics DONT MAKE a game good, no way at all, anybody say AC is good then why, the answer is graphics, soo? I know Mgs will have graphics on par with AC but th Gameplay will be a different story, if there is a ****ssassins creed 2 the gmeplay will prob be the same and they will focus on art direction (WRONG DIRECTION) lol whereas lately all MGS games have different concepts, mgs 3 had the camo and survival features(eating animals), MGS portable ops(Team Leading, Switching players),MG Acid (turn-based strategy, card game)MGS4(who knows? but i know itll be new features you havent een before in MGS!!!!) its a bit like gta, you know' gta san andreas had ability to gain weight, muscle etc. gta 4 will have new concepts, thats what makes a game good not how artistic it is....... How can Kojima like what the montreal team have done to gaming, which is prove its all about making money and not bringing DESCENT NEW entertaining products to the masses intsead they bring a very flawed game to the masses on multi-platform and the masses eat it up without thinking, 'hang on this could be a hell of a lot better!!", and if you could realise that then shouldnt the developer be thinking that and focus on the GAME and not the GRAPHICS, i thought that within 10 mins of ac and anyone who beleives AC to be a top game then youre not a REAL gamer who cares about a games quality and long-lasting appeal, the only good thing about AC is the idea and maybe graphics, once you completed it, then what...........
wait for the next load of **** ubisoft feeds you

Wow... rant more. (first learn to spell, when and how to use the caps-lock key, and refrain from stating the same things repetitively, please.)
So... to you, fully instituted free-roaming in a city filled with crowds is just the developers working on graphics, no innovation there.... but "eating animals" is!?
FAIL
Okay. We get it, you like every Metal Gear game and you were "soooooo dissapointed" (ahahahlmao) with AC. MGS games are great - leagues ahead in innovation (a term that's used entirely too often today by people who don't know what it means) compared to most bland shooters without any substance: Halo.
But, for your information, the long draw distances of cities and landscapes weren't just the developers focusing on graphics. They were actual parts of the game.
Now, as a huge fan of any stealth genre (fantasy or MGS style) since D&D was ported to the PC via the wonderful Baldur's Gate series, I've always wished I could truly hide in and explore cities in a more realistic manner. To me, that's exactly what AC delivered.
Don't spout this mindless, ******ed BS about "real gamers." You make yourself look even more ridiculous.
---
Also - GTA4 won't be featuring the hairstyle and physique customization that GTA:SA did. I wonder why. Maybe these things were too "innovative" (lmao!).

Seriously though, you honestly felt like that "concept" (rofl) made San Andreas a "descent" (aaaahahah) game?

Now I understand why Jade is interviewing Kojima-san. I guess he told Famitsu: "I'll only make the interview if you get me a hot babe like Jade Raymond. And they did! :D
I knew Kojima was a pervert. He was all excited to meet Jade in E3 just to check her "game" :D

It's fashionable to slate AC but for me it's one of my top games of 2007. I can see why Kojima has a lot of time for the team behind it and there's a lot about the game to admire. And I too think MGS4 might struggle to match Creed's performance.
